Draft Lane Cove Southern Catchments Flood Study

In short

CONSULTATION IS CLOSED

PROJECT UPDATE - 21 October

‘The public exhibition has closed. All submissions will be reviewed by the flood study authors and Council staff, and may result in amendments to the draft flood study report and flood mapping.

The final flood study will be presented to Ku-ring-gai’s Flood Risk Management Committee for endorsement before being reported to an Ordinary Meeting of Council. The report will include responses to submissions, which will be anonymised.

Any further queries on the studies should be directed to floodriskmanagement@krg.nsw.gov.au

Council has prepared the study to better understand flood behaviour across Sugarbag Creek, Little Blue Gum Creek and Blue Gum Creek, that all flow to Lane Cove River south of the Pacific Highway. These waterways are in the suburbs of Killara, Lindfield and Roseville, and we want your feedback.

Check whether your property is in the study area using Ku-ring-gai Maps, then read the findings and let us know if you have local knowledge that could help improve its accuracy.

About the project

Council has worked with the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), the community and other stakeholders to prepare the Draft Lane Cove Southern Catchments Flood Study.

A Flood Study investigates flood behaviour in a catchment, showing where flooding may occur and how deep and fast floodwaters are likely to flow.

If your property is identified in the Draft Study as potentially flood-affected, you'll receive a letter or email in the first week of consultation. You can also check how flooding may affect your property using Ku-ring-gai Maps. Flood mapping can be viewed by selecting the “Hydrology” option in the “Layers” menu. Also review the simple flood area map in the resources section on this page.

About the Draft Flood Study

The study was commissioned by Council, prepared by specialist consultants WMAwater, and jointly funded by Council and DCCEEW.

It covers Sugarbag Creek, Little Blue Gum Creek and Blue Gum Creek, that all flow to Lane Cove River south of the Pacific Highway. These waterways are in the suburbs of Killara, Lindfield and Roseville.

The study identifies where flooding may occur and estimates flood depth and speed across a range of events, from frequent floods to rare, extreme ones.

Flood studies improve our understanding of flood risk, support informed decision-making, and provide a basis for flood planning, emergency management and risk mitigation. They also raise community awareness of flood hazards.

For residents and property owners, the study can help answer:

  • Is my property affected by flooding?
  • How deep could floodwater get?
  • Will flood-related planning controls apply to future development?
  • What flood risks should I consider when renovating, rebuilding or developing?

It also gives Council, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and other agencies information to support flood resilience, emergency preparedness and future planning.
